Massachusetts insurance exam: Prometric to Pearson VUE (what changed in 2026)
Last updated
Massachusetts moved its insurance licensing exams from Prometric to Pearson VUE in July 2026. Many study pages online still describe the old Prometric exam. Here is what changed.
Timeline
- Prometric gave Massachusetts insurance exams through July 16, 2026.
- No exams were given from July 17 to 21, 2026.
- Pearson VUE became the official provider on July 22, 2026.
Searching for the Prometric Massachusetts insurance exam?
You can't book the Massachusetts Life or Accident and Health producer exam with Prometric anymore. Prometric's Massachusetts page says it stopped giving insurance licensing exams for the Massachusetts Division of Insurance after July 16, 2026, and that Pearson took over on July 22, 2026. Nobody tested from July 17 to 21.
Where to book now
- Online at pearsonvue.com/ma/insurance, or by phone at 888-674-1558. Prometric's own page points to the same two places.
- Pay the $37 exam fee when you book, by credit card, debit card or voucher.
- The handbook says to book at least 48 hours ahead. Pearson's web page says appointments can be made up to one calendar day before, subject to availability. The two sources differ, so book early if you can.
What is different from the Prometric exam
- You test in person. Pearson's page says "Remote testing will no longer be offered" and lists 29 test centers in Massachusetts.
- 80 scored questions per exam. 50 general questions and 30 on Massachusetts law, plus 10 unscored pretest questions.
- Passing score of 70 on a converted scale, set by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance with Pearson.

Old exam vs new exam (Life Producer)
| Old (Prometric, outline from 2019) | New (Pearson VUE, from July 22, 2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Scored questions | 100 | 80 (50 general + 30 Massachusetts law) |
| Unscored questions | 5 | 10 pretest (5 in each part) |
| Time | 2 hours | Not stated in the current outline |
| Where | Not stated in the 2019 outline | In person at a Pearson test center only |
The old figures come from Prometric's 2019 Life outline. The new figures come from Pearson's content outlines and candidate handbook. Pearson's Massachusetts page says "Remote testing will no longer be offered."
What this means for your studying
- Use materials built to the new outline. If a study guide says 100 questions or Prometric, it was written for the old exam.
- Know your Massachusetts law. It is a fixed 30 of the 80 scored questions on each exam.
- Book a test center seat. Testing from home is no longer offered.
Every Prep Retention practice exam follows the new Pearson outline. Try the free Life practice test or the free Accident & Health practice test.
